Obviously we are in business to make money, so it is still a mystery to me why people sign up for Network Marketing businesses with horrible compensation plans.

It has been proven time and time again that you can make money just from a good compensation plan. Biz opps with vapor products and no real company behind them have caught on and those that got in first or the hot shots who sponsor many, plus of course the company, did make money, but it is always a quick hit, they die out before most people can earn an income.

It has also been proven time and time again that a company can do very well with a product that people love and a horrible pay plan. When people love the product, the company will get many customers and the distributors are actually customers themselves. This can create huge incomes for those that had the luck to get in when the company was young. These companies last, they become very profitable and have huge conventions, give away amazing prizes to the few that are earning a serious income, they can become the most professional and admired companies in our industry.

The problem of course is that no one makes any money. Keeping in mind that there are always those who have most of the company volume in their organizations and they become very wealthy. This is no different than the world as a whole, the few benefit from the masses. 5% of the population has 95% of the wealth.

Lets be honest, Amway isn’t a billion dollar company because they have a good compensation plan, people love their products and never stop buying them.

We do have to acknowledge though that these companies give our industry credibility, they are the standard in the industry, the companies that legitimize our industry to the general public and the government.

I think Shaklee is the best of these companies, but that’s up for debate of course, however when the owner and his wife are on Oprah, there isn’t much you can say about what that company has done for the industry and the quality of the products they provide.

Then we have the company issue, separate from products and compensation plans, the company is actually very important for long term success. If you are looking for a quick hit with a 100% pay out comp. plan then the company doesn’t matter much since the deal won’t be around long enough for the company to mess up. If you are looking for a great product, then you have so many companies to choose from, that you can go with one that already has a long standing track record.

Combining these 3 aspects is tricky.

When a company pays out too much, they don’t make enough money and cannot get to the level of Shaklee, Herbalife, Amway, Xango or Mona Vie. They cannot purchase the best software, create new products, hold events, hire customer service reps, web designers, programmers, etc.

When a company pays out too little, it’s not really a business opportunity is it? It’s more like a hobby or an activity that you participate in. It’s fun and you may meet a lot of people and make a few extra bucks, but you’re not getting to 10K a month. I’ve heard of lots of people who have taken thousands of dollars of their own money to get in and market a company, creating a real business around it, only to fail and lose it all because they didn’t realize just how many people they would need to earn a serious income, how difficult it would be to sign up that many people and the amount of time it takes to build an organization of thousands.

There are the exceptions of course. I still get a kick out of the Guru who gets in early on a new deal, with a compensation plan that is horrible for most, but is loaded with bonuses and incentives, that person, already has a business, they already have followers and a list, they have a marketing funnel in place, they may own their own system, books, videos, courses, etc. They also know other people just like them, as I always say, it’s not how many people you sign up, it’s who you sign up.

They will make lots of money and they will talk about how much they earn and how much you could earn, it’s all true, but not realistic unless you are in the same situation they are in.

There are many other company issues. No marketing tools, unprofessional web site, no conference calls or interaction with the members, no events, not paying on time, bad customer service, etc.

There are many companies that have actually combined the 3 main aspects of a great Network Marketing business. Not nearly as many as you would expect, considering there are thousands of companies overall. They are out there though.

Now, it is your job to find one that suits you. Most people won’t bother weeding out those that do not have an acceptable combination of the big 3. Acceptable meaning, the better the product, the more understanding you would be with the compensation plan, the less appealing the product, the better the compensation plan should be. There is certainly some negotiating going on inside your head. I will be paid less because that product is amazing or I will be paid more because that product isn’t going to get anyone jumping up and down.

Most people won’t bother with any of this. They join companies because someone they know is in it, someone they follow told them to join, they join because of hype. Either the product or the compensation plan is all hyped up and they fall for it. They join because everyone else seems to be joining so it must be good. Normally, it is very simple, they join because of the sponsor, the product or the compensation plan.

It’s all bad. As I ranted about on my home page at http://www.opportunityseekers.com joining anything without completely understanding every aspect of the business, without knowing exactly why you are joining and why this is the perfect business for you is a huge business mistake.

Getting back to the combination of the big 3 and what appeals to you.

A company could do everything right, be one of the best ever created, but if the productdoesn’t appeal to you personally, then it shouldn’t matter. You need to be able to sell this opportunity to others, even if you are not the type to get customers, you aren’t going to be retailing any products, the product or service is of course a major part of the opportunity as a whole and you need to believe in the product or service. That’s not to say that you need to believe it’s going to cure cancer, but you have to know that the product has value.

On the flip side of that, if you love the product, but for whatever reason, it has a small market appeal, then you still won’t be able to sell it. An example of this would be a product that filled a very specific need, you have that need, but most people don’t. Another example would be a product that has too much real world competition, cell phone companies are a great example of this. They provide a great service, at a lower cost and with a pay plan to boot, but do you really want to or do you really think you can compete with Verizon, Sprint and AT&T.

Network Marketing really is all about you. It doesn’t matter one little bit how much the person who is trying to sign you up loves the business, if you can’t wrap your head around the compensation plan or don’t think the product is exceptional.

You have now cut out many more companies as options for you.

You would not believe how many times I am introduced to a company that looks great, has almost all of the elements in place, great management, great product, hot web site, marketing systems, events, a sponsor I want to work with, etc. only to find that the pay plan is one of the worst I have ever seen. It’s disappointing actually, but again, this is business and must be treated as such, so the company cannot be considered as an option.

The Big 3:

A product that I love and believe has a wide appeal.

A compensation plan that is fair for most and doesn’t just cater to the heavy hitters.

A company that is proactive, intelligent, supportive & credible.

As I said above, these are all based on you.

What do you feel is a fair and profitable compensation plan. Your idea of a good pay plan may certainly be different than mine.

Keep in mind, I’m talking about your primary business here, I’m not talking about add-ons, other businesses that you wrap around your primary business. Since they are add-ons, they have to serve a specific purpose and follow a whole different set of rules although if they do have The Big 3, that’s all the better of course.

There are other factors that come into play also, when picking a company, but they aren’t as important as the big 3, some come close though, so I will talk about them in my next post.

There have always been those overpriced mailing services, corporations and other companies that just don’t know any better use them, they charge per mailing, per contact, etc. it comes down to them drastically overcharging for a simple service.

Marketers have always used companies like, Aweber and GetResponse, there have been many others over the past 10 years but most went away because it just got too difficult to deliver the mail with all of the spam issues.

Spam issues however, do not make it more expensive to run the business, they just make it more difficult to provide a good service, since no one wants an autoresponder service that can’t get the eMail through.

I’ve used various companies in my 10 years and even had my own autoresponder on my own server for a while, Autoresponse Plus is autoresponder software that you install on your own server, you pay for it once and that’s it, no monthly bill. I stopped using it after a while because of the idiots that would opt in and then cry spam, when the autoresponder is on your server, this causes problems for all of your eMail marketing, your domain names and your IP addresses, so I decided to go with one of the established companies.

I of course would not use one of the overpriced companies, since my list was over 50,000 and that would have cost me thousands a month.

I went with Aweber, which was $20 a month, unlimited contacts, unlimited amount of eMails sent. It’s the ideal for this type of service. One price, unlimited use.

After a few years, I went offline for a while and opened an offline business, when I came back online, I decided to try GetResponse instead of Aweber. I liked Aweber better, but it’s really just an ease of use thing, either service does what you need it to do just fine.

Now for the problem. Both companies were the standard in the industry for marketers, mainly because of the low price and unlimited use. No one is going to convince me that these two companies were not making money, they are the only options for anyone that knows enough to not get overcharged by the other companies and doesn’t want to install their own autoresponder on their own server.

They have both raised their prices.

They didn’t raise their base price, so you wouldn’t even notice and I’m not really sure if they have grandfathered in existing customers, but as it stands right now, they are both charging according to the size of your list.

Their base price is only for people with lists of 500 or less, so if you have a list that size already or plan on building your list to more than 500, which you should plan on of course since 500 isn’t much at all, then you will have to pay more.

If your list is 25,000, you would pay $150 a month for example. That’s rediculous.

They both still look great at first glance, $18 a month for GetResponse and $19 a month for Aweber, but again, that’s for a list of 500 subscribers or less.

I don’t know what caused this and I think it’s interesting that they both did it around the same time, but I’m not the type to care why, I can’t do anything about it anyway, so my goal was to find a solution to this problem.

In my seach, I found a few other companies, no where near as many as I would have found 5 years ago.

IContact; a bit cheaper for smaller lists but then the same for lists of 2500 or more.

Stream Send; this one seems to be targeting other types of businesses, not marketers and charges per eMail instead of per contact, which is even worse since if you have only 1000 contacts but send 20 times a month, that counts as 20,000 eMails and the cost would be $60 a month. Also, how are you supposed to know how many times a month you are going to send an eMail to your list.

The rest are either software that you install on your own service or complete garbage.

Keep in mind, this is just a simple search that I didn’t spend all that much time on, but I get a lot of eMail and I see what they are using and it’s all the same companies.

Except the one I decided to use.

TrafficWave is $17.95 a month and is still unlimited. Unlimited messages, unlimited contacts, unlimited autoresponders.

You can even import 1000 leads at a time, no limit. The leads do get a verification message, but this is way better than the other companies which either don’t allow imports or have import limits and charge you according to how many you want to import.

Now, I won’t say TrafficWave is a better service, it’s the same service and does not have as many bells and whistles as the larger companies, but it has what you need and is easy to use. It also doesn’t look as good, the web site isn’t as nice and professional and neither is the members area, but again, it is an autoresponder and does that job very well at a much lower cost.

Another benefit; TrafficWave allows you to create capture pages on thier server, so you don’t even need a hosting account or web page. Even if you do have hosting and web pages, you can run a marketing campaign for something completely different and not have to set up more web pages for it, just use one of their capture pages, they have almost 40 capture page templates that you can edit and use to generate subscribers.

Another really big benefit; TrafficWave has a compensation plan. Not an affiliate program like the other companies, which have a 20% – 30% affiliate plan that pays you commissions for anyone you recommend. This is an actual pay plan.

There isn’t much online that annoys me more than the self proclaimed saviors, those message board junkies and blogger boobs that are going to save all of us from the big bad home business scams online.

They are in general, all just cry babies that tried various home business opportunities which didn’t work out for them, I’ve been in 100 that didn’t work out for me, but the big difference is that I am not a little cry baby who blames everyone and everything except myself. I am a grown man and I take responsibility for my own actions, my own decisions, my successes and my failures, they cannot accept the fact that they failed and it cannot possibly be their fault, so it’s the entire industry, Network Marketing, Affiliate Marketing and other home business opportunities that are all over the Internet.

This of course ignores that fact that companies like Amway, Herbalife and Shaklee have been around for many years and are completely legal, not even on the fringe, they are billion dollar companies and have made many people very wealthy, other companies are all just trying to do what they have done, some work out, some don’t, just like any business on the street, some fly, some close, but scam shouldn’t even come into the conversation.

Same with affiliate programs, huge Internet companies like Amazon use affiliate marketing.

There is nothing bad to say about either business.

If you don’t like a product, don’t buy it. Don’t like a compensation plan, don’t join it. Don’t like the company or people involved, don’t sign up.

Those that would save us from these horrible income options are also saying, you are too stupid to know what is good for you so I’m going to tell you, keep working that job, it’s the only way. Now, whose hurting who, I haven’t had a job since 1999, oh, poor me, the Network Marketing industry has just scammed me right into a nice living.

Another thing, they act as if they are an expert at knowing what businesses are “real” and what businesses are scams, in reality, only the law can say what is or isn’t a scam and these people giving us this wonderful advice are people that have never done anything but fail in the industry, why is anyone listening to them.

Even worse is the person who says every biz opp is a scam except …. The One They Are Promoting.

Now, that’s just low, that’s just bad business, that’s someone that cannot figure any other way to market and get sign ups so they go for the lowest form of marketing. Anyone who signs up with a person like that really needs to take a long look in a mirror.

Have I joined businesses that turned out to be scams? Absolutely, but most of the time it was just good intentions mixed with bad management, not being prepared, underfunded, etc. The intent was not to scam anyone, the business just went under like many do.

Have I promoted an affiliate product that I did not feel was worth the price? Never. It may not be worth that price to everyone, but if a person read what the product was about and felt that it would be of value to them, then it’s their decision if they should or should not purchase it, to top that off, all affiliate programs that I have been involved with offer very good refund policies and most use companies like Clickbank which are very quick on the refund trigger, so if you felt the product was not worth the value, you got a refund, no harm done.

The message board junkies just thrive off each other, they enjoy being part of that community where they can all bitch and cry about how everything is a scam, everyone is trying to scam them and it’s their responsibility to save everyone else. Who on earth listens to these people is anyone’s guess.

This little post, which is really a complete waste of time since I’m not actually selling anything and it is my job after all, let’s be honest, to sell stuff, came about because of my direct interaction with one of these saviors, I normally keep my distance since you can’t win, they have nothing better to do and those actually running businesses and making money don’t have the time or the desire to get into pissing matches with this type of group or person.

I made the grave error of actually responding to a person who sent me an eMail, in response to one of my marketing eMails, “Spam” of course to this person, but in reality, I don’t buy eMail addresses, it had to be given to me and it was, when I was involved with Wowzza/WowzzaPower, this person filled out the Free Tour Form, and it shouldn’t be any surprise to anyone that any information given on a web site becomes the property of the owner of the web site, which at the time, was me.

Now, he didn’t ask for the info I sent him and I’m sure the people very into the spam issue may disagree, he filled out the form, on my web site, he was put into my customer list, prospect list, contact list, whatever you want to call it, that’s how things are done online. I’ve gotten all sorts of eMails from all sorts of people and companies and I didn’t ask for that exact eMail, but I did request info from them at one time or another or purchased something from them at one time or another and they are not exactly just going to delete me unless I ask to be removed.

And that is the big issue isn’t it, can you be easily removed, you can be from my list of course, I have no desire to market to anyone who doesn’t want to be marketed to by me. Very simple.

Anyway, he asked how I got his info, of course I have a disclaimer on the bottom of the eMail letting people know but he asked so I responded. I then removed him from the list that he obviously didn’t want to be on.

His original eMail was righteous and arrogant, in response, I was sarcastic but also direct and honest.

He has a blog. OH NO. Right there, I should have known I would wind up on that blog and of course, I did.

Nothing worse than someone with a blog that just complains about everyone else, nothing is really said, no knowledge or information is shared, nothing is gained, they cry, that’s about it.

It’s the voice they never had, now they have one.

His blog is called; Keeping The Bastards Honest, LOL, he couldn’t be anymore typical of the type of person I am talking about.

So, here is his response to my response, not to me directly mind you, that would take an adult, but on his blog, it’s so nice that the Internet gives people a voice that don’t have one in real life, there is a reason they don’t have one in real life, but the Internet doesn’t care.

Some people just don’t know when to keep quiet or just cop it sweet. I replied back in early June to a spam email from a self proclaimed “Professional Internet Network Marketer” by the name of Jim Vigilante. Jimmy was trying to flog a piece of crap called CopyNProfit and stated at the end of the email.

“You have signed up for one of my programs, you are on my customer contact list, to be rem*oved, just reply to this message and put Remove in the subject or body of the message. You are not on a lead list and your info is not being sold or shared. I did not buy your info, I don’t buy leads.”
So I wrote back and said:

Hey Jimmy

“If I “signed up for one of your programs and I am on your customer contact list” how come you didn’t use my name in the email. What, ten years of marketing and you can’t personalise an email ? Want to show me when and where I signed up?
Don’t buy leads. Yeh right !

Now bear in mind I was just venting and like everyone else I get lots of spam. Not all of it however has so much crap at the end of it about why I am receiving it. I had forgotten about it until I received a response 6 weeks later.

Glad you are on top of it keeping us all safe from eMail we didn’t want, can you do something about all the Drug and Software eMail I get?

I signed up for Wozza Power ? Even if it was free I wouldn’t join that piece of garbage, but it isn’t free. This from their FAQ’s

As far as Group Mail makes it too difficult to import the names.

As you can see, my response, although I believe it was like 4 lines and was an actual answer to his question, gave him something to blog about and he did a nice job. It’s amusing, sarcastic, has little digs at me, plays around with my name, although I’m really not sure I get the whole, Jim Bob thing, is he making fun of people that may actually have that name or does he think I’m a hillbilly? Italian, born in New Jersey and my last name is Vigilante, hillbilly doesn’t really fit but whatever.

Here’s the problem with his post.

Should I mention all the spelling errors? I’ll give Phil a pass on those since he was probably so excited to have something to write about.

I am actually a Professional Internet Marketer, since that is how I have made my living since 2000. The term does not really mean successful, expert, or anything of the sort although I am those things, the term professional simply means that you get paid to do what you do.

CopyNProfit is a very good product and is not at all a piece of crap.

The first line, “some people don’t know how to keep quiet”. That would certainly be me and I’m not going to start with this guy. I take that as a compliment.

Listing my eMail addresses, the correct ones anyway, also listed my web sites, since they are in the eMail addresses, I appreciate that since anyone who visits my web site after visiting his will certainly be impressed, not really saying much but I’ll take it. I think his point is that spambots will pick up the eMail and I will get more spam than I already do, oh boo hoo, I’m not one of those people that screams and cries over spam, it is part of the Internet and my delete button works just fine, I can also create a new eMail address in about 5 seconds.

Group Mail, I had never used it before and my first and last names were in one column and group mail wants two, first name, last name, not sure if there is a way around this but it really didn’t matter for my purposes so I didn’t waste time on it. I waste time on things like, writing, which is a nice skill to have online, making money, promoting my web site and business, all things that Phil should probably try.

I would have never seen any of this, if Phil did not visit my blog and post a comment, nice of him, so I visited the link and found all of this on his blog, which was of course why Phil did what he did, very cute. He would not have gotten any satisfaction if I had not seen it, that’s obvious and lucky for Phil, I was just bored enough to check it out.

I posted a comment on Phils blog, but he removed it, I was not nice in it and did not feel that being nice was appropriate. If you have read this much, then you certainly deserve to see the comment:

WowzzaPower certainly does have a Free option, which you signed up for and group mail and my data did not fit together nicely, so I did not waste my time on it.

Affiliate programs don’t cost you anything to promote and that’s a nice benefit, but if I’m really recommending something, I normally purchase it anyway, so that’s not really the biggest benefit, what I have learned is very simple, it is just easier to sell a product that has a one time low cost and that teaches something specific.

Plus, when you sign up someone in a Network Marketing company, you are the sponsor, they are now part of your team, you need to support them, communicate with them, they look to you most of the time, not the company for guidance and support, but with an affiliate product, the person purchases the product and any support or help they may need is directed to the company, even though you made the sale, they are a customer, not a downline member and don’t really require much support or anything besides getting the product they purchased, which is provided by the company, your part in the process is promoting, not building an organization.

You made the sale, you collect your commission, that’s it, that is all that is required of you. Completely different situation than with Network Marketing.

I am well aware that some of the best marketers in the world are affiliate marketers, but just like in any industry, especially online, most don’t make much money and others make ridiculous amounts of money.

So, I understood the potential and had the desire, but also am smart enough to know what I don’t know and being a 10 year Internet Network Marketer may give me a little edge, a bit of a head start with affiliate marketing, but because the two businesses are so different, it really doesn’t help me all that much.

I was back to being a student.

I’ve never had a problem being a student of the industry, I’ve always studied and learned, even studied successful people in other industries to see if what they do could be applied to what I do.

If I really wanted to create an income marketing affiliate products I needed to learn whatever it was that I didn’t already know, I’ve been watching the affiliate marketers long enough to know a little, but not enough, which brings me to the point of this message.

If you are interested in supplementing your Network Marketing business with other income streams or if you are not a Network Marketer and just looking to supplement your income in general, than Affiliate Marketing may be a good way for you to go also.

These two products will help you, there is no doubt in my mind that they will cut down your learning curve to the amount of time it takes you to go through the training, they will make sure that you don’t lose money doing all the wrong things and they are recommended by some of the most respected affiliate marketers online.

Plus, if you don’t agree with me, they both have buyer guarantees, although it’s very unlikely you will need that since these two products are the best of the best at the moment, it’s still nice to know that you have nothing to lose and a new income stream, which could be substantial, to gain.
